Bag Pipers & Plein Air Artists & Hammered Dulcimers, Oh My!

by Terry Heller

Striking a pose in his kilt on the rustic floorboards of the Creamery Pier, award-winning bagpiper Peter Campbell will pipe in the beginning of the 2019 Wiscasset Art Walk season on June 27, 5-8pm. Some say it’s a good bet that even the orange barrels will dance in the street!

Wiscasset Village is always the place to be during the summer, especially on the last Thursday of every month from June through September. This year the galleries and shops will shine with gifted guitarist Rick Turcotte returning to Main Street and with Medomak Plein Air Artists demonstrating their talents on porches and street corners.

And there’s another special music treat in town—Mark Bonin on the hammered dulcimer, accompanied by wife Linda on acoustic guitar, playing in Wiscasset Bay Gallery.

And there’s more—bring your basket or buy a new one: Mindful Gardens will set up a farm stand with fresh produce, herbs, hand-made baskets and wreaths on Middle St.,next to Wiscasset Garden Club which will be selling bouquets of fresh flowers from members’ gardens. All along the way, you’ll enjoy the distinctive high-quality contemporary and historic art in the Village galleries and the one-of-a-kind specialty shops and exquisite antiques venues that make Wiscasset the jewel of the Sheepscot.

A highlight this season is the gallery at 64 Main St., headquarters for the Community Weaving Project – a cross-generational drop-in, hands-on art project to celebrate coming together. Residents and visitors will choose from an array of colorful materials to create simple and unique weavings to take home—or to add to a common tapestry on the “community wall.” Local guest plein air artists will also display their work in the gallery.
